Deep Tissue Massage
in Santa Rosa.
A slow-motion form of bodywork that relieves tension in the deeper layers of tissue. Highly effective for releasing chronic stress areas from misalignment, repetitive motion, and past injuries. Open communication during the session keeps it comfortable; some soreness afterward is normal, so drink plenty of water to help flush what gets released.
What deep tissue work does
What makes a session deep tissue is which layer gets worked. Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals describes these techniques as administered to affect the sub-layer of musculature and fascia, and notes that surface muscles have to relax first, since tight surface muscle prevents a practitioner from reaching deeper musculature. That is why the pace is slow.
People commonly come in for a neck and shoulder line set by months at a desk, a low back that complains after long drives, or an old injury that has quietly lost range.
NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says massage may be helpful for neck or shoulder pain while noting the benefits may only last a short time, and rates the chronic low back pain evidence as low in strength. The Stockholm Neck trial followed 619 adults with subacute or persistent neck pain for a year, comparing deep tissue massage, exercise, both, and advice to stay active. At seven weeks the massage group improved on pain more often than the group given advice. At twelve months that gap had closed, and the trial found no consistent difference in pain-related disability at any point. Short-term ease is what the evidence supports, and it is stated here because it is the honest version.
What a session is like
It starts with questions. The American Massage Therapy Association describes the usual intake as covering medical history, lifestyle, stress levels, medications and areas of physical pain. The therapist then leaves the room while you undress to your comfort level, and you lie under a sheet that covers everything except the part being worked.
Work tends to open broad and warm across a region before anything slow and specific begins, since surface muscle has to let go first. AMTA is clear that your therapist should check pressure and comfort throughout, and that you can consent to the level of manual pressure and request adjustments at any time. I adjust as we go.

What to mention when booking
Mention these when you book: medications, especially anything affecting bleeding or bruising, recent surgery or injury, thinning bone, skin conditions, and anything a clinician is currently treating you for. If you are pregnant, or in cancer treatment or past it, I ask about that at scheduling, and your care team is the place to check whether massage suits you right now.
NCCIH puts the risk of harm from massage at low, with rare reports of serious side effects such as a blood clot, nerve injury or bone fracture. Some of those cases involved vigorous types of massage, deep tissue among them, or people at higher risk of injury such as elderly people. If you are unsure whether it suits you, ask your health care provider.
